Regular People Will Stop Human Trafficking

Regular people are the greatest untapped resource for stopping human trafficking.  It’s true that modern slavery is a serious crime, and people who work against it need experience to battle it legally and as safely as possible.  Unfortunately, it’s not an issue that you can jump into without significant preparation.  Because of that, there is often a perception that the general public cannot do much to stop the world’s fastest-growing crime.  Yet I don’t believe this is true at all.  We are only limited by what we are prepared to do within the confines of the law.

The Flashlight Project is a Christian anti-human trafficking group started in 2012.  As its director, I believe that ordinary people like you and me will change at least part of the world for the better.  How can it be otherwise?  We all know the quote, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”  If you believe that’s true, that puts a tremendous responsibility on all of our shoulders.

Human trafficking is here in Dallas, Texas.  Due to our shared border with Mexico, victims often enter America through Houston and are then sent to other cities.  This includes Dallas, which has bars, spas and other places operating as fronts for prostitution.  Some of the women working inside of them are sex trafficking victims.  This cannot be tolerated, and thankfully, our law enforcement works hard every day to put an end to it.

Where does that leave the rest of us?  Do not underestimate yourself.  While we must stay within legal and safety limitations, there is still much that we can do.  The Flashlight Project needs determined volunteers to come onboard and join the fight against modern-day slavery.  In particular, we are searching for people who are:

  • Christian
  • Committed to ending slavery in our society
  • Free on Saturday mornings
  • Comfortable with going out into the streets of Dallas in difficult weather
  • At ease with talking with people who are homeless
  • Good communicators
  • Patient and optimistic
  • Willing to serve on the board of directors

If this sounds like you, for more information please send an email to Jeannine Weaver at info@theflashlightproject.org.  There will also be an informational meeting on June 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Union Coffee Shop near SMU in Dallas.  Please consider joining the fight to end slavery.  We were all given our freedom for a reason.
